WIRECUT

Our cutting-edge WEDM services can deliver a phenomenal positional accuracy of +/- 0.0001″, thereby firmly establishing us as a leading provider of high precision machining services.

Wirecut Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM), or Wirecut machining, as it is most commonly known as, is a variation of EDM that makes use of a taut, thin wire to produce extremely intricate designs on thicker parts that were hitherto impossible with conventional machining methods.

At Focal, wire-cut EDM is executed by our advanced CNC enabled instruments on parts that are made of electricity conducting materials. The thin wire is supplied with a current, and when it approaches the conducting material in a dielectric liquid, thousands of sparks are produced every second between the wire and the component. The resulting heat melts or vaporizes a minuscule amount of metal, leaving the debris often intact for recycling or reuse. The resulting work is a remarkably accurate line with unrivaled precision.

Sounds futuristic? You bet it is!

We use WEDM to work on parts as big as 1117mm x 812mm x 320mm or 44″ x 32″ x 12.6″ in size, and made of Alloy Steels, Beryllium, Hastelloy, Haynes, Inconel, Monel, Nitronic, Stainless Steel and Titanium. Since our process does not use mechanical force on the parts and cause any burrs, this is the preferred machining technique for delicate parts and for applications that cannot afford the smallest compromises in the material integrity of the parts. We also make use of WEDM for producing miniature prototypes of much larger components and parts, which are often machined using conventional machining techniques.

Focal’s WEDM services epitomize precision engineering.
